Justicia spicigera is in the family Acanthaceae. Commonly known as Mexican Indigo, it is native to the southwestern United States, Mexico, and Guatemala. Mexican Indigo is a small shrub that grows up to 3 feet tall and produces axial clusters of orange tubular flowers. This species has been used as a source of indigo dye in Mexico since pre-colonial times, and is isolated from the leaves. Mexican Indigo is also considered a medicinal plant and has been used to treat a variety of ailments including dysentery and anemia.
